Volunteers needed
Looking for volunteers before January 18th 2017!
On February 1, 2017, Edmonton City Council will be receiving recommendations from the administration on regulations government the Mature Neighbourhoods Overlay https://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/urban_planning_and_design/mature-neighbourhood-overlay.aspx Through the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, we have an opportunity to share our views on these recommendations.
As Edmonton grows, it’s important for residents in mature neighbourhoods to share their opinions about how new residents can be welcomed into their communities without losing the qualities that make each community special and unique. These qualities can include the look and feel of streets, homes and buildings, and the presence of tree lined streets and alleys

With a local resident of Cloverdale, and AFLCA fitness leader Lynn Lindsay
Move to the oldies in this mixed-level class offering exercise for every body! The workout includes components of cardio, strength (including core), balance and flexibility for a well-rounded, one-hour workout!
January 19th – March 9th
9 – 10 a.m. Thursdays (8 week class)
Cost $42 (minimum12 participant required)

A pair of dumbbells and a yoga mat will be required. The instructor will provide resistance bands for use. Athletic shoes and light comfy clothing should be worn, and bring along water for hydration!

Cloverdale Hall to become a bit greener!
On November 23, 2016 the membership of Cloverdale voted to make some improvements to the community hall.
To improve the energy, harvest the sun and be socially responsible Cloverdale approached Carbon Busters to upgrade and repair the hall. In the coming months Cloverdale Community League will be upgrading windows and doors, replacing hot water tanks with on demand, installing high efficiency furnaces and LED lights, replacing the air conditioning with air source heat pump and roof with metal roofing and install PV solar panels.
Cloverdale hopes to lead the way and become a green learning resource and demonstration site for community and the Edmonton region. Cloverdale Hall will decrease its carbon footprint, reduce dependence on non-renewable energy and improve the environment for future generations.
Cloverdale Membership and Executives are excited to increase the awareness of green energy options and extend the lifespan of the hall and its activities.
MILLCREEK DAYLIGHTING OPEN HOUSE
On November 16, the City of Edmonton hosted the first public open house for the Mill Creek Daylighting project. The open house gave us the opportunity to introduce the project to Edmontonians, collect feedback on current and future uses, and understand what Edmontonians value most about Mill Creek and the study area. Feedback gathered at the open house was very valuable to the project team and was utilized in the development of conceptual design options for creek restoration.
On December 13, 2016, City staff will host a second public open house to present early results of the technical feasibility study and the three conceptual design options that have been developed. This event will give Edmontonians another opportunity to learn about the project and provide feedback regarding the conceptual design options and a future vision for the area. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the drop-in event, which will take place at the Hazeldean Community League on December 13. We are looking forward to engaging further with local community members as well as Edmontonians who regularly visit or commute through the area.
Cloverdale Community Flood Mitigation
Update on Cloverdale Community Flood Mitigation
The City of Edmonton meet recently with the Cloverdale Flood Mitigation Committee to provide an update on flood mitigation improvements in the neighbourhood. New protocols for river floodgates and communications employed in 2016 proved to be effective. To improve two way communications during times when the river is high, the City plans to launch riveralerts@edmonton.ca in 2017. This exclusive email will give residents direct access to drainage staff for their questions or concerns during high river events. However, street or home flooding should still be reported to 311.
Flood mitigation infrastructure improvements that will benefit Cloverdale, as discussed in 2015 with residents, are being considered for inclusion in the 2019-2022 drainage capital budget. This capital funding plan will be finalized by the end of 2017 or early 2018. A major indicator of what will be in the plan will come in the second quarter of 2017, when an update of City’s flood mitigation strategy is expected. The priority of projects will be affected by City-wide needs, the risk of not doing upgrades, what else is planned for Cloverdale (such as LRT, neighbourhood renewal), and other factors. Whenever possible, required drainage work will be done in conjunction with other major City activity in Cloverdale to minimize disruption to local residents and traffic.
The City has committed to keeping the Cloverdale community informed about drainage improvements. Executive Meetings
The CCL Executive board meets once a month at the Cloverdale Community League Hall. The next meeting is December 14th @7pm and anyone can attend these meetings.
SPECIAL MEETING
Cloverdale Community League (CCL)
7:00 PM November 23, 2016
Purpose:
- To vote on a Special Resolution to authorize the CCL board of directors to engage Carbon Busters/C-Returns to act as project managers for the CCL to carry out the scope of work identified in Estimate #EH000162, which is part of the Cloverdale Community Hall Report – Energy Audit & Green Visioning, (September 2016), prepared by Carbon Busters, at an estimated cost of $300,000, subject to positive confirmation of various municipal, provincial and federal funding and matching funds and volunteer labour from the CCL.
- To vote on a Special Resolution to authorize the CCL board of directors to engage Carbon Busters/C-Returns to act as a project manager for the CCL to carry out the demolition and reconstruction of the deck, ramps, and planters around the exterior of the CCL hall at an estimated cost of $110,000 subject to positive confirmation of various municipal, provincial and federal funding and matching funds and volunteer labour from the CCL.
Recommendation:
The executive of the CCL recommend that the members approve resolution 1 and resolution 2.
Background:
- Article 3 of the CCL bylaws states that a special resolution:
- Means a resolution at any meeting for which 21 days notice has been provided, requiring a vote of three-quarters (3/4) majority. A special resolution will be required for all Bylaw revisions, significant financial matters outside the approved budget and over $2500.00, policy issues, or other major issues as specified in these Bylaws or at the discretion of the Board.
- On May 18, 2016, the members who attended a Special Meeting of the CCL authorized the CCL board of directors to hire Carbon Busters to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the physical condition and to conduct an energy and carbon assessment of the CCL hall located at 9411 97 Avenue, Edmonton AB. The rink shack was excluded from the study.
- Carbon Busters did the assessments in the summer of 2016 and submitted its findings to the Capital Projects Committee and CCL board of directors in September 2016.
- Carbon Busters identified opportunities to reduce the hall’s carbon footprint as well as opportunities to reduce or eliminate energy costs and fixed utility costs. The firm also examined a wide range of potential building retrofits and upgrades which are expected to yield a positive internal rate of return (IRR) and/or a minimum emission reduction of 1 tonne of CO2e The reported documented the estimated annual and lifetime energy savings and payback periods for each recommendation.
- The capital projects committee met in September and October 2016 to identify and recommend to the CCL board of directors a selected number of options from the recommended list.
Scope of Work
The Carbon Busters report identified:
- Air leaks around windows and doors
- Inadequate insulation in the crawl space and attic
- Exterior deficiencies that can lead to water infiltration
- Aging and inefficient furnace, make-up air units and air conditioners (HVAC)
- Options for renewable energy generation
- Damage and wear to the existing deck and ramp
Objectives of the proposed CCL hall green energy retrofits and upgrades
- To plug the holes
- Seal and caulk leaks, cracks and gaps in the building envelope and exterior
- Upgrade weather-stripping of windows and doors
- Upgrade windows and doors
- Upgrade vapour barrier and insulation in attic and crawlspace
- Repair/Replace deck and ramps
- To improve energy efficiency
- Replace furnaces with high efficacy (96%) furnaces
- Replace air conditioners with air source heat pump
- Optimize ventilation system
- Replace existing lights with LED
- Replace domestic hot water heater with on demand, on site unit (s)
- Upgrade equipment control and reporting systems
- To harvest the sun
- Re-roof the hall with metal roofing
- Install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels
- Participate in microgeneration contract with electricity provide to generate income from PV solar panels
- To be socially responsible
- Decrease carbon footprint
- Reduce dependence on non-renewable energy
- Improve the environment for future generations
- Buy green power
- Be a learning resource and demonstration site for community and great Edmonton region
