Edmontonians looking to give back are invited to join a local charity providing food security to vulnerable members of our community. Edmonton Meals on Wheels is kicking off the “Spring into Volunteering” recruitment drive with the goal of bringing 70 new volunteers onboard to prepare, package and deliver the meals that thousands of homebound Edmontonians rely on. The organization is looking for dedicated volunteers who can commit to regular and ongoing shifts in the kitchen or delivering meals to client’s homes.

“Volunteers are our essential ingredient. With their support, Edmonton Meals on Wheels provides more than just a meal for our clients. Our kitchen volunteers help prepare healthy, nutritious meals in our downtown food production facility. Volunteer drivers provide vital social connections and informal wellness checks. We celebrate client birthdays and other special occasions, providing flowers, cards and special meals. Volunteers experience first-hand the impact their role has in the community,” says Liz Tondu, Edmonton Meals on Wheels’ Executive Director.

The organization accepts both individual and group volunteer applications, and all are welcome to pitch in: work colleagues, sports teams, families, and other groups are encouraged to apply for team building and social fun in support of a great cause!

Edmonton Meals on Wheels has been diligently combating food insecurity since 1969. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the volunteer-driven organization has seen demand for their services skyrocket, with over 1,200 meals produced each day. The volunteer hours contributed to Edmonton Meals on Wheels in 2021 were the equivalent of over 26 full-time positions.
